How an item becomes one cent
Nobody at corporate is doing you a favor. A penny price is an internal instruction that leaks onto the sales floor for a few hours, and the whole hobby lives inside that gap.
Goatavo scores every discount on one ladder. 50–69% is yellow. 70–98% is green, the house color for saving. 99% and above is gold — and a penny item is the only thing that ever pins the gold badge at a clean 100%.
The item stops being reordered
A buyer kills the SKU. The planogram for the next reset doesn't have it, so the warehouse stops shipping it and the store keeps whatever is left on the peg.
Typical lead time: the SKU is dead 4–9 weeks before anything visible happens on the shelf.

One cent is not a sale. It's the flag corporate uses to tell the store: this is done, pull it, count it out. Nobody prints a new tag, because nobody expects it to sell.
At Dollar General this fires with the Tuesday 4:00 AM price file. At Home Depot it happens whenever the bay is reset.
It stays scannable until someone pulls it
The shelf tag still says $5.00. The peg still has eleven of them. The only thing in the building that knows the price changed is the register — and the price checker on the wall.

The window is hours, not days
Once one person posts it, the store gets a pull order that afternoon. By Thursday the good ones are gone in the metros and only rural stores still have them.

The tag on the peg was printed the last time somebody reset that gondola. It has no idea. The register reads the file that updated at 4:00 AM this morning, and so does the price checker on the wall. The entire skill of this hobby is pointing something at the barcode before you get excited.

Six rules that keep the list alive
This hobby survives on the goodwill of people paid $14 an hour to stand next to the shelf you are emptying. Every one of these rules exists because somebody broke it and a whole district got locked down.
Scan it. Never ask an employee to check.
The moment you ask, you have told a manager the item needs pulling — and you have made it their job to say no. Use the app scanner or the price checker on the wall.
Don't clear the peg.
Take what you will genuinely use. Fourteen of the same lip crayon is how a store stops honoring the list, and how the list dies for everyone in that district.
No is a legitimate answer.
A penny price is a pull order, not an obligation. If the cashier voids it, you say thanks and you leave. Arguing at the register is the single fastest way to get a whole region locked down.
Post the SKU, not the store number.
Goatavo posts region-level confirmations for exactly this reason. Naming store #04412 in a public thread gets that store swept and its manager warned by Friday.
Never film staff.
No register videos, no photos of the person ringing you up. The community removes them, and the person in the video is the one who pays for it.
Confirm what you got.
A confirmation takes four seconds and it is the entire reason the list works. One scan from you saves 300 people a drive across town.
Three of the six are enforced in the product rather than in a pinned post: store numbers are region-masked, register videos are removed on sight, and an account that posts a swept shelf loses its scout badge. The other three are on you at the register.

Is buying a penny item actually allowed?+
It rings up at the price the system holds, and in most states the register price is the price. But a penny is a pull instruction, not a promotion — a store can decline the sale, and plenty do. The community rule is simple: if they say no, you say thanks and you leave.
Why is the list always late everywhere else?+
Because it lives in a comment section. Somebody posts a photo Tuesday morning, forty people reply 'still up in GA?', and by Wednesday nobody can tell which reply is current. A row you can sort, filter and set a watch on survives Wednesday. A thread does not.
Do I need to know the SKU before I go?+
No. You scan. Point the app at any barcode in the store and it tells you the register price, whether that price is a penny flag, when it dropped, and how many people have confirmed it this week. Shelf tags lie by design here; the scanner is the whole ritual.
Which stores actually penny?+
Dollar General is the metronome — a price file every Tuesday at 4:00 AM local. Home Depot pennies constantly but on no schedule. Family Dollar trails DG by about a week. Walmart's $0.01 is a do-not-sell code, Costco never pennies at all, and Target only does it on salvage codes. Goatavo labels every one of those differently rather than pretending they are the same thing.
How do you stop the list from being wrong?+
Nothing reaches the list until three people have rung it up. After that every row carries its confirmation count, the number of states it has been seen in, and the accuracy scores behind it — so a row that just cleared three confirmations from 61%-accuracy accounts looks nothing like a row with 1,406 confirmations across 31 states.
Will this get my store swept?+
Confirmations are shown at region level, never as a store number in a public thread. You see 'Home Depot · Airport Blvd' only inside your own radius, and the map aggregates anything with fewer than three confirmations.
Is the penny list all Goatavo does?+
